Mexicans against kidnapping

150,000 Mexicans have marched in Mexico City’s main street to protest a rising wave of kidnappings. Holding candles or flowers and dressed in white, marchers in the capital’s Paseo de la Reforma main street carried posters and pictures of kidnap victims and signs saying, “Enough Is Enough”. They want Mexican President Felipe Calderon to carry out promises to crack down on crime.

Tropical Storm Gustav hit Jamaica with near hurricane-force winds on Thursday after killing at least 59 people elsewhere in the Caribbean and taking aim at New Orleans and Gulf of Mexico oil fields, where it could become a major hurricane next week.

Tropical Storm Gustav drifted from Haiti and the Dominican Republican where 22 people were killed and the storm triggered floods and mudslides. Authorities in Cuba began evacuating residents as the storm pressed on towards the Gulf of Mexico. Sarah Irwin reports.
